How to reach Darjeeling?

Darjeeling is easy to reach via road, rail and air. But one will need proper road transport for the final leg of the journey. The airport and railway junction are located in Siliguri, West Bengal.

Darjeeling by Air: Bagdogra Airport is the closest domestic airport to reach Darjeeling. It is at a distance of approx. 96 KM. Many prominent airlines like Jet Airways, Air India, Indigo, Spice Jet and Go Air have direct flights from every metro city.

Darjeeling by Rail: Darjeeling has its own railway station. Diesel and steam trains travel up the mountain from New Jalpaiguri, Siliguri. The total time travel may take up to 7 to 8 hours. Since it is a slow yet scenic ride uphill.

Darjeeling by Road: Roadways have easy access to Darjeeling. And the quickest way to reach the hill station as well. From either New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri City, you can get taxis to Darjeeling. For a budget taxi, you will get sharing jeeps from Darjeeling more in Siliguri. It is 30 minutes from the NJP railway station.

Best places to visit in Darjeeling

Darjeeling cannot be explored within a day. You will need at least a week’s time. Because there are so many beautiful tourist places to see in Darjeeling. And some of the mentions are below:

Tiger Hill

A visit to the famous place to see the sunrise in Darjeeling is a must. Tiger Hill is located roughly 40 mins. from the centre of Darjeeling. It is considered a must-do activity in Darjeeling for sunrise. Make sure to visit early in the morning. It gets very crowded with tourists to catch the first ray of the sun. It is also the best place to watch the Kanchanjunga.

Observatory Hill

If you cannot go to Tiger Hill, then make sure to visit Observatory Hill. It is located near the famous square in Darjeeling, Chowrarasta. This place is a famous viewpoint in Darjeeling and a tourist attraction. It provides stunning views of the Kanchendzonga. There is also an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. But be cautious as several monkeys live in this part of the town. Hold your belongings not to get them snatched.

Chowrarasta Square

A common meeting square among tourists, locals and students. Chowrarasta Square has several cafes and souvenir shops. It is also an ideal place for pony rides, you can take your kids for such fun activities. The meaning behind the name is basically a place where four roads meet. This is a historical square of the Victoria era. Often times when large gatherings happen, Chowrarasta is the hosting square.

Batasia Loop

You can visit Batasia Loop via car or stop between journeys from Siliguri to Darjeeling. But the best way to do so is by a steam toy train. The attraction is a spiral railway route where the train spirals around a tunnel and over the hill. It is to create a gradual ascend into the mountain. There are options to take a tourist train from Darjeeling to Batasia Loop. You can also halt at Ghoom and explore the museum within the vicinity of the train station. Ghoom is famous for Buddhist sites.

Happy Valley Tea Estate

For the love of tea gardens, come to Happy Valley Tea Estate and enjoy the lush garden. It will give you a sense of happiness when here. Spread across 437-acres, this site is one of the top tourist attractions in Darjeeling. The tea estate has one of the oldest tea factories established in 1854. If you plan to visit, the tea estate is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM. The months of March, April and May are the best time to witness the plucking and processing of tea.

Japanese Peace Pagoda

A two-storied Japanese style complex is one of the key attractions in Darjeeling. Built from 1885 to 1985, the pagoda is a Buddhist shrine with four large Buddha statues facing in every direction. The location itself is very strategic since it is surrounded by rich nature with a view of Kanchenjunga. There is also a museum and a shrine within the vicinity of the pagoda. It has a peaceful atmosphere here.
